When looking back on the areas top sports stories in 2014, the ones that rise to the top tend to be of the disappointing variety.
That said, there were definitely some triumphs, but at the top of the list are a pair of familiar stories that echoed all the more resonantly this time around, in part because their outcomes seemed so unlikely from the start.
In terms of sheer news value, the latest disaster involving the Buena football program and its inability to keep a head coach, but that storys getting to be rather old hat.
Instead, for No. 1 sports story of 2014, were going to go with another venture that had all the right ingredients for success, but didnt turn out that way.
After all, Buena will hire a new head football coach in the coming weeks, and that coach may or may not be here a year from now.
But the opportunity missed in Bisbee is one that may never come again.
1. Pecos League pulls out of Bisbee and Douglas after one season.
Professional baseball hadnt been played in Historic Warren Ballpark for 11 years when Andrew Dunn, owner of the Pecos League of Professional Clubs, decided it, as well as Copper King Stadium in Douglas, would be a good spot for the next two expansion teams in his stable, even thriving league that was headed into its fourth season.
Almost from the outset, Douglas was a bust, but Bisbee, which 11 years earlier, turned out in droves to watch the Bisbee-Douglas Copper Kings of the Arizona-Mexico League in its three weeks of existence, didnt turn out very well either.
In Bisbee, Dunn found that forming a front office was difficult and that prospective sponsors, still stung from losing their investments 11 years earlier, were unwilling to jump on the bandwagon. As Dunn put it, "Its like they think were going to steal from them."
One bright spot was that the Pecos League did finish its one professional season in Bisbee and Douglas, but right after the season Dunn pulled plans of returning to Douglas. Without a second team to make the road stop economically feasible, it was really just a matter of time before the Pecos League was going to pull out of Bisbee, and in November, it did just that.
Though Dunn will continue to own the Blue, the team will play as a college summer league squad - the same level its played at for most of the last 11 years - this failure means minor league ball may never play at Warren Ballpark again.

July 19 2014 The Bisbee Blue defeated the Douglas Diablos 11-4, scoring 19 hits and taking advantage of a six-run fifth inning. Bisbee also scored three runs in the first and two in the eighth to pull away, while Douglas scored twice in the first and added single runs in the eighth and ninth.
Mike Perrone led Bisbee with four hits and two runs. Daniel Aldrich went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, while Brett Zaziski collected three hits and two RBI. Clemente Parra added three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs. Chris Allen had two hits and one RBI.
Ryan Calby earned the win after allowing five hits and three earned runs in seven innings, striking out eight and walking three. Felix Roque tossed a scoreless inning, and Kody Thiebaud allowed one unearned run in the ninth. Douglas starter Brett DeRooy took the loss after surrendering 10 hits and eight earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Derek Voigt and Ryan DiMascio each had two hits for Douglas, with DiMascio driving in two runs. Douglas finished with nine hits and committed one error, while Bisbee played errorless baseball.

July 18 2014 The Bisbee Blue rallied past the Douglas Diablos 10-9 after Douglas erased a nine-run deficit with a four-run eighth inning. Bisbee scored nine times across the second through fourth innings before the Diablos answered with one run in the fifth two in the sixth two in the seventh and four in the eighth. Bisbee scored the deciding run in the ninth to secure the victory.
Daniel Aldrich led Bisbee with a home run and three RBI while going 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Chris Allen went 2-for-5 with a double an RBI and a run, and Clemente Parra collected three hits in five at-bats. John Zalud added a double an RBI and a run for the Blue.
Douglas received three hits and two runs from John Gianis, who also doubled twice. Derek Voigt had two hits and a walk, while an unidentified Douglas batter recorded two hits three RBI and a run. The Diablos finished with 11 hits, compared with 14 for Bisbee.
Joe Robinson earned the win for Bisbee with 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out three and walking one. Craig Lipp started for the Blue and allowed five runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Douglas starter Matt Acker surrendered nine runs on eight hits in three innings, and Caleb Olsen took the loss despite allowing only one run over 5.2 innings.

Bisbee broke out for five runs in the first inning, added four in the fourth and scored two in the sixth before putting the game away with three-run innings in both the eighth and ninth. Douglas scored four runs in the second but could not keep pace. Brett Zaziski led Bisbee with three hits and four RBIs, including two doubles. Daniel Aldrich went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and hit a home run, while Clemente Parra added two hits, four RBIs and a home run. Chris Allen also had three hits, scored three runs and stole a base. Bisbee finished with two home runs, five doubles and a triple. Dan Bartlett earned the win for Bisbee after allowing five hits and three earned runs in four innings, with one walk and four strikeouts. Kyle Renaud followed with three innings of two-hit, one-run relief and two strikeouts. Ryan Lubreski took the loss for Douglas, surrendering nine hits and 11 runs, 10 earned, in six innings while striking out seven and walking six. Derek Voigt paced Douglas with three hits, two runs and one RBI. Matt Page and Malquiel Brito each collected two hits, while Ray Roman, Logan Lotti and Ryan Roberts also drove in runs for the Diablos.
Wright allows no runs to lead the Roswell Invaders past the Bisbee Blue 5-0
Josh Wright kept the Bisbee Blue (30-30) off the board during his seven innings of work and the Roswell Invaders (37-24) beat the Bisbee Blue, 5-0.
Wright allowed six hits, two walks and struck out seven.
Evan Mansell racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Roswell Invaders. He singled in the third inning and homered in the eighth inning.
A bright spot for the Bisbee Blue in the defeat was Matt Horan, who allowed only three runs while striking out seven.
Horan ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his third loss of the year.
Mooney leads the Roswell Invaders to 3-2 victory thanks to 13 strikeouts
Tuesday was a great day for Josh Mooney, as Mooney struck out 13 batters to carry the Roswell Invaders (36-24) to a 3-2 victory over the Bisbee Blue at Warren.
Dominic SanFelippo put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for the Roswell Invaders. He doubled in the first inning and tripled in the third innings.
Clemente Parra was solid at the plate for the Bisbee Blue (30-29). Parra went 1-1, drove in one and scored one run. He.
Dylan Ryan (3-4) took the loss for the Bisbee Blue. He lasted just seven innings, walked two, struck out four, and allowed three runs.
The Roswell Invaders get 8 strikeouts from Zaragoza in 6-1 win over the Bisbee Blue
Ernie Zaragoza struck out eight batters to lift the Roswell Invaders (35-24) to a 6-1 win over the Bisbee Blue (30-28) at Warren.

The Roswell Invaders (34-24) continued to pile up the runs on Sunday, scoring three runs in the last three innings, on the way to a 13-2 landslide win over the Bisbee Blue (30-27) at Warren.
The Roswell Invaders scored three runs in the eighth on the Roswell Invaders scored in the eighth on a two-run single by Eric Gaylord and a sacrifice fly by Dominic SanFelippo.
SanFelippo racked up two RBIs on four hits for the Roswell Invaders.

Both the Alpine Cowboys (42-18) and the Bisbee Blue (30-26) put runners aboard on Saturday, but it was the Alpine Cowboys that were able to take advantage, pulling out a 4-2 win at Warren.
Casanova Donaldson got on base two times in the game for the Alpine Cowboys. He singled in the third inning.
Brandon Cooksey racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Bisbee Blue. He singled in the fourth inning and homered in the sixth inning.
Pat Lemmo improved to 6-1 on the year by picking up the win for the Alpine Cowboys. He allowed two runs over six innings. Lemmo struck out two, walked three and gave up six hits.
Jose Diaz (0-1) was the games losing pitcher. He lasted just four innings, walked five, struck out five, and allowed four runs.
The Alpine Cowboys top the Bisbee Blue behind Donaldsons 3 hits 13-3
Casanova Donaldson hit two home runs to carry the Alpine Cowboys (41-18) to a 13-3 win over the Bisbee Blue (30-25).
The Alpine Cowboys ran up the score, scoring runs at will until the final out. The Alpine Cowboys scored four runs in the last three innings to finish off the blowout win. The Bisbee Blue best the Douglas Diablos in shootout 17-10
Pitchers had a tough day during the game between the Bisbee Blue (29-22) and the Douglas Diablos (23-28), as the two teams put up 27 runs combined in a 17-10 the Bisbee Blue win.
The two teams combined for 35 hits in the game.
Seven runs in the first three innings helped the Bisbee Blue blow out the Douglas Diablos. A two-run home run by Daniel Aldrich during the first inning and a sacrifice fly by Mike Perrone, a two-run triple by Antonio Alvarez, an RBI double by Aldrich, and an RBI double by Chris Allen in the second inning supplied the early offense for the Bisbee Blue.

Even though Craig Lipp allowed 10 runs over eight innings he still recorded the victory, his third of the season. He struck out six, walked three and surrendered 16 hits.
Mike Bradstreet couldnt get it done on the rubber for the Douglas Diablos, taking a loss. He allowed 12 runs in 3 2/3 innings, walked three and struck out four.
The Bisbee Blue easily handled the Douglas Diablos pitching as six hitters combined for 15 hits, 13 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

July 6 2014 The Douglas Diablos scored four runs in the ninth inning to secure an 8-5 victory over the Bisbee Blue. Douglas finished with four hits and overcame an eight-hit effort by Bisbee in the win.
Douglas opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth inning and added two more in the sixth. Bisbee answered with one run in the third three in the fourth and one in the eighth but could not hold the lead after Douglas broke the 4-4 tie with its four-run ninth.
Jean Batista provided Douglas with a home run and two RBI while Chris Matthews also drove in two runs in a 1-for-1 performance. Ryan DiMascio and Logan Lotti each added an RBI. Bisbees Brett Zaziski and John Zalud collected two hits apiece with Zalud contributing an RBI.
Bryer Mueller worked six innings for Douglas allowing six hits and four earned runs while striking out six. Anyelo Roman earned the win with two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit and Ryan Pitt recorded the save with one-third of an inning and one strikeout. Bisbee starter Ryan Calby allowed three hits and four runs in eight innings while Michael Heller was charged with the loss after allowing four runs in one-third of an inning.

July 4 2014 The Douglas Diablos defeated the Bisbee Blue 13-7 after breaking open a close game with six runs in the eighth inning. Douglas scored four times in the first and added three runs in the fourth before pulling away late. Bisbee scored three runs in the first and added one run in each of the third fifth sixth and seventh innings but could not match the Diablos’ final surge.
Logan Lotti led Douglas with four hits in six at-bats including two home runs and four RBI. Malquiel Brito went 3-for-6 with two doubles and scored twice while Matt Alton and Ryan DiMascio each collected three hits. Douglas finished with 19 hits and seven walks. For Bisbee Chris Allen went 2-for-2 with a home run an RBI and three runs scored while Brett Zaziski had two hits and two RBI.
Donavon Rigel worked eight innings for Douglas allowing eight hits and seven runs with six earned runs while striking out eight and walking six. The game information lists Mac Acker as the winning pitcher and Robert Latner as the losing pitcher. Latner allowed five hits four runs and four walks in 3 1/3 innings while Joe Robinson gave up three hits and two runs in two-thirds of an inning.

July 2 2014 The Bisbee Blue scored in each of the first four innings and defeated the Douglas Diablos 17-3. Bisbee collected 17 hits, overcoming three errors, while Douglas finished with six hits and three errors. The Blue took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, extended it to 4-2 after two innings and led 8-3 after three before breaking the game open with a nine-run fourth inning.
Brett Zaziski led Bisbee’s offensive attack, going 4-for-4 with three runs, a home run and five RBIs. Clemente Parra added two hits, three runs, a home run and five RBIs. Mike Perrone and Cody Brown each had three hits, while Chris Allen had two hits and two RBIs. Bisbee also received two RBIs apiece from Brown John Zalud and Thomas Goodman.
Goodman earned the victory after allowing six hits and three runs, two earned, in five innings. He walked one and struck out six. Douglas starter Jake Hovis took the loss, surrendering 14 hits and 14 runs, 11 earned, in 3 2/3 innings while striking out seven. The result moved Bisbee to 33-30 and Douglas to 27-36.

The Roswell Invaders best the Bisbee Blue in shootout 10-9
Fans were treated to a high-scoring affair Sunday as the Roswell Invaders (27-20) outscored the Bisbee Blue (26-20) 10-9.
The two teams combined for 27 hits in the game.
It was a good day at the plate for the Roswell Invaders Mitch Rowan. Rowan went 3-4, drove in one and scored three runs. He doubled in the third inning and singled in the fifth and eighth innings.

Jeff Eubank clubbed two home runs as the Roswell Invaders (26-19) took home a 6-3 victory over the Bisbee Blue (25-19) at Joe Bauman Park on Friday. He homered in the sixth and eighth innings.
Josh Mooney racked up nine strikeouts in the the Roswell Invaders win. Mooney allowed three earned runs, seven hits and five walks over nine innings.
Kody Thiebaud couldnt get it done on the mound for the Bisbee Blue, taking a loss. He allowed six runs in 7 2/3 innings, walked two and struck out five.
Eubank, Ryan Retz and Ryan Normoyle helped lead the Roswell Invaders. They combined for six hits and six RBIs.
The White Sands Pupfish takes early lead on wild pitch holds on for 8-5 win over the Bisbee Blue
Five first-inning runs helped the White Sands Pupfish (19-22) to an 8-5 win over the Bisbee Blue (25-18) on Thursday.
The White Sands Pupfish scored in the first on a wild pitch, a groundout by Yermin Mercedes, a groundout by Willie Miller, a solo home run by Preston Lyon, and an RBI single by Jacob Anderson.
Miguel Castano paced the White Sands Pupfish at the plate. Castano went 4-5 and scored two runs. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the first, sixth, and eighth innings.
Mike Ormseth picked up the win for the White Sands Pupfish. Ormseth pitched seven innings and allowed two earned runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

June 25 2014 The White Sands Pupfish defeated the Bisbee Blue 7-2 behind a 14-hit offensive performance. White Sands scored twice in the first inning, added a run in the third, two in the sixth and two in the eighth. Bisbee scored once in the fourth and once in the fifth while finishing with 10 hits and one error.
Yermin Mercedes led the Pupfish attack by going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Nate Enriquez and Miguel Castano each drove in a run, while C. Littleman hit a two-run home run. Preston Lyon added a triple, and White Sands also benefited from two hits apiece by Enriquez and Castano.
Casey Collins earned the win after allowing six hits and two earned runs over six innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Joe McCarty, Ian Drapcho and J. Martinez each worked a scoreless inning in relief. Bisbee starter Thomas Goodman took the loss after surrendering 12 hits and five earned runs in six innings, with three walks and one strikeout.

The White Sands Pupfish (17-22) beat the Bisbee Blue (25-16) 7-2 on Tuesday at Alamogordo, NM _The Aquarium_ behind Yermin Mercedes, who had two extra base hits. He homered in the first inning, singled in the second and sixth innings, and doubled in the eighth inning.
Daniel Aldrich had a hot bat for the Bisbee Blue. Aldrich went 2-4, drove in one and scored one run. He homered in the fourth inning and singled in the sixth inning.
Casey Collins improved to 1-0 on the year by picking up the win for the White Sands Pupfish. He allowed two runs over six innings. Collins struck out two, walked one and gave up six hits.

The Bisbee Blue (25-15) and the Roswell Invaders (23-17) both had scoring chances on Sunday, but it was the Bisbee Blue that were able to capitalize on them as they pulled out a 9-6 win at Warren Ballpark.
The Bisbee Blue were led by a flawless day at the dish by Mike Perrone, who went 3-3 against the Roswell Invaders pitching. He singled in the first inning, doubled in the third inning, and tripled in the sixth inning.
The Roswell Invaders were led by Ryan Retzs hitting. Retz went 4-5, drove in one and scored one run. He singled in the first, second, seventh, and ninth innings.
Ryan Calby got the win, running his season record to 1-0. He allowed four runs over 6 2/3 innings. Calby struck out four, walked two and gave up seven hits.
Josh Mooney (7-1) took the loss for the Roswell Invaders. He allowed nine runs in seven innings, walked six and struck out six.
The Bisbee Blue need walk-off single to beat the Roswell Invaders 13-12
A walk-off single from Clemente Parra brought home the winning run for the Bisbee Blue (24-15) in a 13-12 victory over the Roswell Invaders (23-16) at Warren Ballpark on Saturday.
The Bisbee Blue were led by Parras hitting. Parra went 1-1 and scored one run. He singled in the ninth inning.

Nate Enriquez led the Pupfish offense by going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Preston Lyon went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while F. Frias added two hits and an RBI. Aaron Olivas scored twice and Justin Cook drove in a run. For Bisbee R. Roberts had two hits and two RBI while Chris Allen added a hit and an RBI.
Matt Cook earned the victory for White Sands after allowing three runs two earned on eight hits in 6.1 innings. He struck out eight without issuing a walk. Mike DeLong finished the game with 2.2 scoreless innings allowing no hits and striking out four.

Leandro Mateo went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs and three RBI, while Jean Batista added three hits and three runs. Ryan DiMascio contributed two hits and three RBI, and Ray Roman had two hits, two runs and one RBI.

May 15 2014 The Bisbee Blue defeated the Douglas Diablos 9-3 at Copper King Park. Bisbee scored in five different innings and finished with eight hits while Douglas collected 10 hits but committed five errors.
Bisbee took the lead with a run in the second inning and added another in the fourth before breaking the game open with a three-run fifth. The Blue extended their advantage with two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth. Douglas scored once in the first and twice in the ninth.
Roberts led Bisbee’s offense by going 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and a home run. Mike Perrone and Daniel Aldrich each drove in two runs, with Aldrich also hitting a home run. Douglas received two hits from Leandro Mateo and Corben Green while Green and Yuki Yasuda each recorded an RBI.
